Casa do Arrabalde Overview
These two renovated villas are well located, just a short walk across the Roman bridge to the town of Ponte de Lima in North Portugal.

The villas are situated in the extensive grounds of the Manor House, Casa do Arrabalde, and are separated by an old, unused entrance to a small lane behind the property.

Both Casa do Arrabalde villas are furnished in comfortable, country style.

Lagar Villa

The front door opens into the living room in which the sofa can be used as a single bed. There is a stone fireplace and a dining area suitable for five persons.

There is also a fitted kitchen with a four burner gas cooker, microwave, kettle and toaster.

The two bedrooms share a bathroom which has a shower over the bath. Both bedrooms have twin beds and, in one of them, a folding cot can be placed for a young child.

Casa da Eira

First floor :

There is a twin bedroom and a separate bathroom which has a shower over the bath.

Twin bedroom with French windows leading to a balcony. Open area with stone steps leading to the garden.

Ground floor:

Large living room with open fireplace and a dining area suitable for six persons. There is a sofa bed which can be used as a single bed.

Fitted kitchen with a four burner gas cooker, microwave, kettle and toaster.

Both villas have central heating for winter use. There is a supplement payable locally if it is used.

The gardens at Casa do Arrabalde have many citrus and olive trees to provide shade from the sun.

Also in the grounds is a swimming pool which is shared by the two villas. The dimensions of the pool are 10 meters by 5 meters and the depth is from 1.10 metres to 1.80 metres.

It is possible for a family to take both villas, which are adjacent, and have exclusive use of the swimming pool, although the two young children from the main house may come visiting.

Ponte de Lima is famous for its 'Tascas', small eating places where the quality of food is important - with the decor being of no consequence.

It is recommended that the adventurous should try these although many of the dishes are regional and may not be to the taste of visitors from overseas. It is acceptable to order one portion (which is very large) for two persons.

Ponte de Lima has an excellent golf course.

We stayed at Casa do Arrabalde in a 2-bedroom cottage in August. The accomodation, breakfasts and hostess/staff were all excellent. One strange thing - the swimming pool was neither salted nor chlorinated. This was no problem for me but may be an issue for those who are very hygiene-conscious. I'm not an expert so can't really say if this is a problem or not. The town of Ponte de Lima is a lovely place and is a great base for day trips - it's an easy half-hour drive from the coast to the west and the mountains to the east. Local cuisine (including tripe, blood sausage, salt-cod) will not necessarily be to everyone's taste, but the restaurants and bars are cheap, clean and friendly.

Out of the 5 weeks we spent in Portugal, our 4 night stay at Casa do Arrabalde was one of the most memorable. After much sightseeing and golfing it was a haven of peace and quiet, set in a beautiful garden with a sparkling pool and walking distance over the ancient bridge to the delightful village of Ponte de Lima. Our hostess Isabel was charming and helpful and a member of the local golf club so we were able to avail ourselves of their special membership rates. We enjoyed the course so much - played there 3 times. The accommodation was comfortable and adequate with a delightful authentic historical feel, which is what we love. It was bliss sitting out on the large patio in the evenings, tired from golf, drinking wine from the Duro valley with our picnic supper gleaned from the excellent local supermarket. Portugal has the best olives ever. Highly recommended.
