Casa Sao Joao Overview

This 18th Century Manor House, also known as Casa Reymao, is in the village of Santa Marta de Portuzelo near Viana do Castelo, an historic sailing town in the Costa Verde in the Minho region.
Situated in a lane, in a rural area with uninterupted views, Casa de Sao Joao has an extensive walled garden giving total privacy.
The house has remained in the same family for generations. They are one of the oldest families in the of North Portugal. During the 19th Century the then owner became a member of the Portuguese government.
The original style of the house has been preserved giving it great charm and is ideal for those who appreciate the lifestyle of a previous age.
Like most houses in the area, it is built of solid granite walls. This helps to maintain a pleasant temperature all year, provided that the Portuguese custom of not opening windows in the heat of the day is followed.

Accommodation

The furnishings are very traditional, "Portuguese old style". The cosy living room has a fireplace and television.
On the ground floor there is a small twin bedroom with shower room, in earlier times this was the maid's room.
There is a dining room and a basic kitchen. The washing machine is located in a glass enclosed veranda facing south.
Upstairs is the master twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom. There are also 2 twin bedrooms and 1 double bedroom which share a bathroom.
One of the bedrooms has a balcony with spectacular views over the property to the nearby town of Viana do Castelo.
There is free wireless internet access in all areas of the house and in the garden.

The gardens around the house are approximately 1 acre in size and have lawned areas, fruit trees and views to the vineyards.
The swimming pool is 10 x 5 meters with a maximum depth of 1.60 metres.
Games available at the property include table tennis, volleyball and badminton. There is also a small children's play area with swings.
The house has a spacious garage suitable for two cars.

Location

The Atlantic beaches of Afife, Carreco and Cabedelo, which are excellent for bodyboarding and surfing, are about 15 minutes by car.
One of the most famous restaurants in the region is less than one hundred meters away and specialises in traditional regional cuisine.
The very scenic Ponte de Lima golf course is 25 kms away, it has been described as 'championship golf at municipal prices'. It also has an excellent restaurant.
For sight seeing you may care to visit the Peneda-Geres National Park, the walled town of Valenca and, Vigo, Baiona and Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Also, the Portuguese cities of Braga, Guimaraes and Porto which are easily reached by motorway.
The recently expanded airport at Porto is also within easy reach by car. Low fares to this airport are now offered by a number of airlines. Alternatives, are the Spanish airports of Vigo and Santiago de Compostela which are reached by motorway.
