Casa Roma Orbacem, Minho Portugal for rent as self villa catering accommodation

Casa de Roma Overview
Casa Roma Orbacem is a delightful 19th Century farm house, with annexe, which has been lovingly restored to provide comfortable, spacious accommodation, whilst retaining the atmosphere and character of a bygone age.

The house is idyllically located on a hillside in the Ancora Valley on the edge of the charming, rural village of Orbacem. From its very private position, Casa Roma has magnificent views across vine girded fields to wooded hills and mountains in the distance.

There are many beautiful walks from the house and the river Ancora, with its clean clear water, is a short stroll across the fields where there are rock pools suitable for swimming.

The house is approximately 8 kilometers from the coast and there are a number of excellent beaches very close including, at the small coastal fishing town of Vila Praia de Ancora. It has a long, sandy crescent shaped bay and numerous restaurants, many specialising in locally caught fish.

There are 3 excellent golf courses within easy driving distance, there is canoeing and horse riding close by and the local Afife beach is a surfer’s paradise.

The wild, rugged Peneda-Geres National Park which can be explored on foot, horseback or by car, is an hours drive away.

Further afield, there are many interesting places to visit including the historic towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo, Caminha, the fortified border town of Valenca, Braga, Guimaraes and of course, Oporto, the centre of the port wine industry.

Galicia, in neighbouring Spain, is a short car ferry ride away and is 30 minutes drive from the house. Another very pleasant trip is to Bayona, also in Spain.

A feature of Casa Roma is that the living area is on the upper level to take advantage of the magnificent views. There is also outside access from both levels.

Upper floor: A very spacious "L" shaped open plan living area with an arched wood panelled ceiling and exposed stone walls. There are lounge and dining areas totaling 60 square metres.

There is also a spacious, well equipped kitchen with plenty of work surfaces which incorporate a breakfast bar.

Another feature is the massive chestnut beamed open fireplace complete with original bread oven.

Leading off from this area is a roofed veranda, ideal for dining outdoors.

In the converted barn (annexe) immediately adjacent and on this level, there is a double bedroom and shower room.

There is a laundry room on the lower level of the annexe.

Ground floor: Hallway and one double bedroom with full ensuite bathroom and French windows opening onto a private patio/terrace.

Two twin bedrooms and separate bathroom. One bedroom opens onto a lower paved area.

The property is fully equipped with radio, music centre, oven, refrigerator, washing machine and garden furniture.

The swimming pool is in an elevated position and is set in extensive grounds. It sits on a wide terrace, fenced and gated making it safe for children and has a superb views over the valley, fields and vines. The dimensions of the pool are 9,5 by 4.5 metres. There is also a poolside changing room.

An extensive patio area with built-in roofed barbecue, partly shaded by chestnut and olive trees, is ideal for dining al fresco. On a separate upper level is a grassed area with citrus and olive trees graced by an old maize store and threshing stand.

A shop in the next village provides basic necessities and incorporates a cafe/bar where simply meals can be had very cheaply. There are also a number of supermarkets down on the coast, 10 minutes by car.

The international airport in Porto is approximately a 1 hour drive from the house.

We had a fantastic visit at Casa Roma! The villa is perfectly located for day trips to Villa Praia Ancora, Ponte Lima, Valenca, and Viana Do Castelo. Also loved exploring the small villages and waterfalls around Roma. The owner is a wonderful host, taking time to guide us through a hike in the area, inviting us for a drink, and welcoming us with a nice assortment of food and wine. The pool was also a great hit. Thank you for everything.

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday with our family of 14 including all our children and grandchildren. We took both Casa Roma and Upper Roma for three weeks during August 2010. The location is more or less perfect, extremely quiet, close to the Atlantic coast and swimming in the sea and with a river more or less running right through the property with rock pools for swimming and waterfalls for viewing. You are also close to Spain and fabulous fish restaurants in A Guarda, a 25 minute excursion. Trips to Porto, and other equally appealing villages and towns are all readily accessible. Walks in the National Park are short distances away. The two farmhouses are just the right level of sophistication for a large and varied family. Older members can find quiet places to read while the younger ones can use the outdoors with pool and make whatever noise they want without disturbing the neighbours. The houses are well-enough equipped although you may find that the top to the pan you want to use will be found in the other house. The owner was more than helpful with suggestions and support for our local tours and midweek arranged a wonderful lunch for all 14 of us with a roast kid as the “piece de resistance”.
